Understanding Irrational Thoughts

irrational thinking thought-work thoughts Mar 24, 2026

We all have them. Some struggle more than others, but we all have them.

If you do regular thought-work, they likely affect you less. Not none, but less. When you're doing regular thought-work, you're able to recognize irrational thoughts faster and address them right away.

When you're not doing regular thought-work, there's a chance the irrational thoughts can become a repeat pattern and have a deeper affect on you.

Either way, the work to handle these thoughts is the same. The goal isn't to get rid of irrational thoughts, because they are a common part of our human experience. The goal is to acknowledge without judgement, label as just a thought, and allow it to be there.

When you label the irrational thought as "just a thought", it gives you the separation and distance that allows you the perspective to make decisions around it. Do you want to keep thinking this?

Does this thought feel aligned with what is true for me? Is this the experience I want to be having?

Thoughts are always a choice. When we are doing regular thought-work, we are directing our minds intentionally. Deciding what to thinking and pointing our thoughts in that direction.

When we are refusing or resisting a thought, we are putting our energy on the thought. Instead, we simply want to allow the thought. Write it down or imagine putting it in your hand. Get curious. Acknowledge and allow. Then decide what you want to think instead.

When you find yourself at the effect of irrational thoughts, this is the practice to work through them.

I go deeper into this topic in the video. Irrational thoughts can be tricky. They can come by surprise and they can take over without us realizing. Remember you are always in control of your thinking. And these exercises are always here for you to redirect your mind and change your experience.
