Choosing Discomfort

discomfort dream expansion growth Apr 28, 2026

Why would anyone choose discomfort? I would first argue that they are already unknowingly choosing discomfort.

There are two types of discomfort. One that keeps you stuck where you are. One that moves you towards your desired outcome.

We can so easily slip into staying right where we are. Our brain will offer that even though it might not be great, it's safe and known. It's our current patterned thinking. It's our current life routine. It's common and familiar. But, ask yourself, do you feel any conflict inside? Any churning or stirring?

The alternative type of discomfort is that of growth and expansion. It's the path that leads to your dream life. It's allowing yourself to dream, deciding what you want, and intentionally going after it. Yes, it comes with a lot of discomfort. New things, scary things, fear. But also, excitement, pride, accomplishment, happiness, progress, and growth.

Both paths are paved with discomfort. One has you staying right where you are. The other has you moving toward a new life.

You may not even realize you are choosing one or the other. A desire pops up and you quickly avoid it by distracting yourself. You avoid the idea, desire. You avoid the possibility. You avoid feeling fear of the unknown, uncertainty of something new or different. You stay stuck where you are. Living the same day on repeat.

What I'm asking of you today, is to choose consciously. Choose intentionally.

It really is a choice. You have to believe in the possibility. Believe it is a choice. And then choose consciously.

What do you want for your life? Look around. Is everything around you exactly what you'd consciously choose? If not, did you know you can make a different choice?

When we normalize that either decision comes with discomfort, we can relax into the experience. There is no wrong decision. There is a wrong way to decide. Distracting yourself into just staying where you are is the wrong way to decide.

If you consciously look at both options and intentionally decide what you want, that is the right way to decide.

Notice every time you go to grab your phone...is it to do something intentional? Contact someone or look something up? Or just to avoid whatever thoughts or feelings are coming up in the moment?

The grabbing our phone habit can be one that steals all these dreams away from us. It's the handheld distractions always within reach. Anything we don't want to think about or feel, we can distract ourselves away from in an instant.

But sometimes we do this without even realizing. Something so subtle bubbles up and we grab our phone out of habit. It's just our programmed response.

We don't actually stop and think about what just bubbled up. What is that? What am I thinking or feeling? Where is that coming from? What does it mean?

We see inspiration somewhere and before we can even consider the possibility, our distraction habit has kicked in. We don't even get time to ask ourselves if that is something we would want for our life. We steal this opportunity away from ourselves.

The choice is always ours...and either choice is discomfort. Which type of discomfort will you consciously choose?

The Discomfort of staying the same?

Or the Discomfort of growth and expansion and dreams and really living?

Know that your brain will always offer staying the same. It's how it's designed. It's your survival mechanism. We can thank our brain for keeping us safe and alive, and also make a different choice. We can still choose our dream life. Our brain will always be there to keep us safe and alive. While we follow our dreams!
