What do you Desire?
Apr 15, 2025What do you Desire?
Do you have things in your life that you want to accomplish? Goals or intentions? And then when it comes time to do the task that supports that goal or the intention, something derails your original intent?
I've never thought of myself as being disciplined, although I know in some areas of my life, I live very disciplined. I don't connect with the idea of being a disciplined person. And when I set goals that are challenging to accomplish, I sometimes tell myself I need more discipline.
Recently I heard a concept of using Desire to fuel accomplishing what we want. And this I connected to! I like the idea of listening to my desire and honoring my desire in the moment. See, the desire is what fueled setting the goal or intention in the first place. So, we just need to tap back into that original desire in the moment.
When we decide we want to accomplish something, we have desire for it. We have the connection and alignment to the goal or intention. We have solid reasons, we have a strong "why" this is important to us, and so we decide our goal or intention. Then in the moment, you feel like you need more motivation or energy to do the task that aligns with your goal or intention.
What happens in that moment? I've been working on this for myself, trying to figure out what is different in the mornings when I do get up on my alarm and the mornings I don't. I noticed that when I get up, I don't have any inner dialogue, I'm not renegotiating or re-deciding. I'm simply honoring my original desire.
Our caveman brain will interject all the reason why NOT to do the thing. It's one and only purpose is to keep you alive. It thinks that getting out of the warm bed and being cold, exerting energy, and causing pain to our body is not in our best interest. But, we have already decided to get up early and go workout. Lift weights that are heavy or might hurt a little, raise our heart rate, and make us sweat. All of that actually supports our goal of strengthening our body and staying healthy or becoming healthy. You can see how the caveman brain would not agree with this. Our caveman brain tells you to conserve energy, avoid pain, and seek pleasure. But, we have already decided to workout every morning at 5:30am and set our alarm for 5:15am. It's not dangerous to execute this plan. It's actually in our best interest.
We can tap back into our original desire in the moment and tell our caveman brain that we thank it for keeping us alive, but this is actually how we do that, and we get up like we planned. We can also decide ahead of time that we are committed to this plan and in the moment we will not entertain any discussion on the topic. We will simply get up and do the thing that we originally decided we wanted.
Desire is such a luxurious experience. I feel it's one we don't take advantage of often enough. It's inside of us, it fuels everything we do or don't do. We just need to get very curious and explore more of our desires. We sometimes stop asking or listening to our true desires. We end up living a life that is at the effect of everyone around us. And we can find ourselves feeling very dissatisfied with life or even unhappy.
Being prepared for the caveman brain to interject in the moment, can help keep you aligned with your goals. When you expect it or just plan on not listening to it, you will find it easier to just do the thing you planned. Any time your brain offers you contradicting thoughts in the moment, you can count on this being your caveman brain. You can decide ahead of time not to listen or not re-decide or renegotiate on your plan. You can redirect your thoughts to your original, true desire.
We have these true desires inside of us for a reason and a purpose. Our divine purpose on this planet is not to do what everyone else around us wants or needs. It's NOT to ignore what we want and need. Allow yourself to turn inward and ask and listen and get curious. Find some quiet time and get to know your true desires.
Your desire is your fuel for accomplishing anything you want. You might not think you have any desires inside of you, but I promise you they are there somewhere. They have either been ignored or suppressed, but they do exist. You just need to reconnect with yourself and rediscover what you want in life. Ask yourself what you want! It's okay. It's actually what you were intended to do. You are here to follow through on what you truly want in your life.
You might think this sounds selfish, but it's actually the opposite. When you put yourself first and fill yourself up, everyone around you will benefit. When you give to everyone else first, they all get some of you and it's maybe half effort or half energy because you're spread too thin. When you take care of yourself first and show up as your best self, everyone around you gets a better version of you and gets a better experience.
You deserve to live the most amazing life. And that begins by tapping into your true desire. Spend some time getting curious. Explore what you desire. Once you open this door, you might find more and more comes to the surface. What a wonderful thing to connect with and align with. This is your true self. Your divine purpose. This is why you are on this planet!
